Well, for one we avoid all the ugly arguments about why we need to encode the metadata into archive/compressor/tarball/blahblah format X. Two, we allow users to see and view the files without having to "download" anything. Three, we can upgrade metadata seperately from the binaries when one changes but the other doesn't need to.
