Thanks for that. Unfortunately, no change, but I'm going to start combing device.hints for any devices my laptop doesn't have, and turn them all off, maybe I'll get lucky. Looks like I can install amd64 on it, but I don't think the currently-running i386 6.1 release is the problem, you'd think if the processor type was the issue it wouldn't run at all.
