Yes, please file a PR so that the documentation gets updated to reflect this. You can't be the only person who wishes to do this. As I said, I think it's worth extended rc.conf to have a specific "ether" field for ifconfig, so any device-specific weird crap (especially when creating cloned devices) can be done at the right point before the interface is brought up.
