I'm inside a GDM session now and cannot test this, but I think the following should work without changing anything in the default .xinitrc or .xsession file of the user: $ startx /usr/local/bin/xterm -- :1 I'll test this a few minutes later, but if it works most of the new text of the patch is not necessary.
