I think you need to configure the screensaver for the
first time, so a configuration file is present. If I
remember correctly, the command

	% xscreensaver-demo

allows you to pick your screensaver and set values like
timeout. It will then create ~/.xscreensaver, a text
file containing the configuration.

But I'm not FULLY sure, please consult xscreensaver's
manpage for details.

Everything else "feels" to be correct so far.
