Do you have a hypothesis why not using -mrtd > could cause a problem (a miscompilation?) ? I've just got one: maybe the trouble is caused by the sio_putc procedure in sys/boot/i386/btx/btx/btx.S. It seems to be the only place in the boot code where 'ret <number>' instruction is explicitly used. A litmus question: do those experiencing the trouble all have BTX_SERIAL defined? P.S.
