thank you for catching my stupidity... I've got to stop patching things until
I get time to test properly (one of the joy's of cisco was being able to
slug off and play freebsd games).

  Yes.  host.h_length is 0 until it is set in the "else" clause.
  Since the answers that return are not 0 length, they all get
  ignored.
  
  This is different in 4.9.4 because of its AAAA support.
