Trying various things, it turns out that the problem is between the xf86-video-intel driver and the awesome (x11-wm/awesome) manager. I had the following in my .xinitrc file: exec awesome This file did not have any problem with the xf86-video-vesa driver. But with the xf86-video-intel, it was causing Xorg to crash. I installed x11-wm/fluxbox and changed the .xinitrc file to contain exec fluxbox and the Xorg process does not crash now. So, it appears that there is a problem when the following combination is used: x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel + x11-wm/awesome I can live with x11-wm/fluxbox. But, I think there is a problem with xf86-video-intel on FreeBSD (when using the 945GM graphics chipset along with x11-wm/awesome). Since I have fluxbox working with xf86-video-intel, I'm on my way. When I get a chance I'll try to spend some more time with xf86-video-intel and x11-wm/awesome to see if we can make this work well on FreeBSD. Warren, Thanks very much for all the assistance you've provided. Next time I'm up in Rapid City, S. Dakota, I will buy you beer or lunch or both.
