NetBSD implemented this and had the same argument we are having on 
there lists 4 or 5 months ago.  The outcome of that arguments was the
code we lifted from them.  Now, we did this change 3 months ago,
you should have complained then, not now when in the middle of cutting
the final release.

If GNU make don't have it, it is *NOT* POSIX conformant!
