Obtuse? Personally  I believe that they are models of clarity.

See http://www.symbios.com/t10 for the PDF files for the latest
specifications for SCSI (and others- I think everyone owes Symbios a
rising cheer of thanks for keeping this website- it's too bad I don't
like the SCRIPTS architecture of their SCSI chips- otherwise I would
think they were a *completely* cool company). I have, in the past, paid up
to 450$ to Global Engineering Documents for the officially approved
specifications- these are free and, if not 'official', so close as to
make little never minds.
