Did you build kernel/world with -O2 flags and other optimisations like
-mfpmath=sse, omit pointers and such?

Are you using DRI?

My experience is that anything other than -O -pipe for world and kernel
can lead to instabilities with X. However higher optimisation levels for
XFree86-* seem to be ok with regards to stability.
