I have noticed that the new thunderbird (and some users have also reported the same with firefox) will crash in libpthread when trying to start up in a clean account. libmap'ing libpthread to libc_r, starting thunderbird, then libmap'ing libpthread back to libpthread seems to work, but I think there may be a libpthread problem.
