Could someone help me figure out where to look and what to fix? Make sure hald and dbus-daemon are running. You should have: hald_enable="YES" dbus_enable="YES" In /etc/rc.conf. It also looks like you're trying to run GNOME as root which is not a good idea. Try running it as a regular user.
