I've finally gotten a stable qemu image for mips running and will be
trying out various things for ports.

I note that the MALTA config specifies a ROOTDEVNAME that doesn't seem
to be a buildable configuration.
e.g. options         ROOTDEVNAME=3D\"ufs:ada0s1a\"

Does it make sense to create a new kernel conf for this emulated MALTA
support or does it make sense to figure out how to make a image that can
be booted via this root device?
