I have a very noisy SCSI DAT backup tape drive which, for peace of mind, I leave turned off. The problem is that I need to reboot (with the tape drive turned on) -- in order for the kernel to probe the device -- whenever I want to do a backup. Is there a way to force a probe while the system is running (i.e. at a time other than boot time)? Alternatively, is there a way to configure the kernel so that the SCSI DAT tape drive is always assumed to exist, rather than having it probe()'ed for? The hard drive is also a SCSI device, so the SCSI interface AHA-1542C (I think) is found during boot-time probe, as is the SCSI hard drive. Thanks!
