I'd like to suggest that install is being un-necessarily strict in requiring a swap partition ... I suggest it should merely warn & encourage, like it does for /var & /usr (unless maybe swap is required during the install itself as raw disc for unpacking or something). Reason I suggest we not mandate a swap: space. I was installing a small disc without space for swap, as I needed a little system up, for diagnosing other problems. I've built small systems by hand without swap before, one just has to be modest in process launching. As I couldn't use 2.1.6 install to do this, I've abandoned 2.1.6 install, & am cloning my spare 80M scsi disc from a current system. I could imagine other candidates for FreeBSD might have their sizable discs in use already, & also like me, want to see if their hardware will boot etc, using a small spare old disc ... so a pity that swap is mandatory.
