A good memory diagnostic is to boot the FreeBSD install; if it fails in 8M or more, you probably have flakey RAM. 8-). Seriously, short of a hardware tester of some kind, there are no real good RAM diagnostics that I know of, and certainly no software ones that are anything but high-level (and therefore mostly useless).
