Guess the problem is moot now as I was pounding key sequences and didn't think before pounding Ctrl-Alt-Delete. System politely shutdown and rebooted just like it was supposed to. Maybe it wasn't apparent in my posting that I had a text display, the X display was gone. Was able to startx via telnet from another system. Forgot to add before, used "ps -aux" to scan all the processes guessing somebody still had control of the console. Found nothing. Altho it *shouldn't* have mattered because I couldn't get to any of my (3) getty's running on vty's (yes, a getty was running on the console I used to startx, as I had logged off it). "killall getty" respawned the vty getty's and didn't help. -- David Kelly N4HHE, dkelly@nebula.tbe.com ======================================================================== Whom computers would destroy, they must first drive mad.
