Hello FBSDer's ... I'm in the market for a new 'puter and will be getting (building) a dual Pentium II box, and I'm currently in information-gathering mode. I haven't read too many negative things about the Tyan Thunder and Tyan Tiger dual Pentium II boards. I scanned through the archives wanting to know about the support of the onboard SCSI, etc. and was able to find some threads on it but nothing coming to closure. David Greenman was quoted as saying: ".... The aic-7895 is only supported in the new, experimental SCSI system that Justin is working on which is due to be complete in a few months." Now that the CAM switch-over has happened and (from what I can gather) is relatively 'stable' (I'm not running -current but I try to stay up with the lists ...) could somebody out there give some information as to the quality of the Adaptec AIC-7895 on-board controller support with the new CAM code? How 'bout "testimonials" from people who own either one of these motherboards? Tyan's website says its BIOS is the "AMI WinBIOS" ... this sort of makes me leary (anything with "Win" in the title ;-). Should I be concerned about everything working with FreeBSD (e.g. "win-modems" and "win-printers" that simply won't work outside of Windud) or is "WinBIOS" just a clever name to attract the NT lemmings? It claims to have Creative's Vibra 16 VX sound onboard too. I assume this is supported under the umbrella of "sound blaster compatible"? Any people out there using this motherboard, please mail me with your experiences!!! It sure would be cool if we could start a "pool" of info from people about the motherboards/configurations that are being used by FreeBSD. I think this would be a good resource in addition to the "release notes" hardware compatibility sections. I could volunteer some time to consolidate e-mail messages ... perhaps I'll post something to the newsgroups and/or -current tomorrow.
