Hi Folks, If you want to know where you can REALLY make a dent in the Microsoft Juggernaut, let me give you a hint: Samba Really. About two weeks ago I took an NTAS machine which I had been using for quite some time for file service at my home. I measured, carefully, the performance levels I was getting from the machine for file service requests. Then I reloaded the box with FreeBSD, loaded the Samba port, configured, and retested. I was frankly shocked. The SAME P166/64MB machine was almost FOUR TIMES as fast on disk I/O, it came up on the first try, and it "just worked". Impressed isn't even the right word for it. I was floored. The automated user directory management along with the rest was more than enough for me, not to mention the easier administration *and better security*. I doubt I'll ever find a valid use for NTAS again (PC file and print service was the ONE place that I found NTAS to be worthwhile). And yes, it authenticates just like an NT machine - in fact, you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference from the client side. Then price NTAS and then compare it with $0 + $0 (FreeBSD + Samba). Tell me why everyone in their right mind isn't doing exactly this? -- -- Karl Denninger (karl@denninger.net) http://www.mcs.net/~karl I ain't even *authorized* to speak for anyone other than myself, so give up now on trying to associate my words with any particular organization.
