I only run -current, so I can't speak authoritatively WRT your specific situation, but... Once upon a time, I observed symptoms very similar to what you describe when using the Linux rvplayer. Then, a number of commits were made to the Linux emulator and the two sound drivers in the -current tree (by Amancio Hasty and Luigi Rizzo, if I recall correctly), and suddenly the rvplayer began to work Just Fine. I don't believe these changes were backported to -stable (but I might be wrong)...
