All release tags have the form RELENG_x_x_x_RELEASE, where the x's are 
the three version digits.  There is no tag for 2.2.8 as it hasn't 
happened yet.  You can follow the tree up to (and past) 2.2.8 using the
RELENG_2_2 branch tag.
