Netmasks are ignored for point-to-point links...  this shouldn't have 
anything to do with your problem, but the latest versions of ppp 
*should* get the netmask right.

Take a look at the FAQ (http://www.FreeBSD.org/FAQ/userppp.html) to 
get some hints on how to diagnose your problem.
