You > don't need a different set for each kernel. That's more by luck than design. Take BPF as a counter example. Take BRIDGE also. What if I want to compile out the SMP support on my local kld's? The present system is a hack and sys/moduiles/* is going away when we have a coherent build system to replace it (which is why there should be no source there at all, and why sys/modules/syscons/* is misplaced).
