I was recently notified that I was a member of a class-action
lawsuit against Toshiba on behalf of all laptop owners.

It seems there is a microcode bug in the floppy disk controller chip
that could (in theory) cause data loss or corruption when used with
a multitasking operating system.

The settlement offered includes a patch to be used with your
operating system. FreeBSD 3.x was on the list of systems for which
there were patches available, although the Toshiba web site only
offered Win9x and NT 4.0 as choices.

Does anyone on this list have more information? Is the fault on the
laptop real? Who developed the FreeBSD patch, and what does it do?
Is it open source?
