Doh! Netscape being aout had nothing to do with it (sorry, it was very
late when I replied). I was thinking of the install program that comes
with Netscape, but that's a shell script and the ports don't use it anyway.

Well, the message:
/usr/libexec/ld.so: warning: /usr/lib/libc.so.3: minor version -1
older than expected 0, using it anyway
ld.so failed: bad magic number in "/usr/lib/libc.so.3"
must be from one of the programs run by make, install(1) possibly, and
points to a screwed libc.so or you've somehow got a mixture of ELF
and aout binaries on your system.
How did you u/g to 3.4, and from what version?
What does ``file /usr/lib/libc.so.3'' and ``file /usr/bin/install'' say?
Mind you, if libc is screwed I'm surprised that anything runs.
