Please take a look at what NetBSD just recently did: http://www.netbsd.org/Changes/#softdepsmount These changes disables the whole 'tunefs' process, and let you control softupdates state with mount, (-o softdep). So all you have to do is to tune your /etc/fstab to enable softupdates.
