First of all, you should learn some basic unix concepts. Try reading some introductory tutorials on unix generally. Second, to explain everything would be a lot to explain. The writers don't have time, and it will be beyond the scope of the document. Maybe you should try varieties of OS that have a Linux kernel, like Mandrake, Redhat, Slackware... Then dig into FreeBSD.
