However, it won't be compatible with any vendors rdist and will only
be useful in FreeBSD/Linux-only environments unless rdist6 has been
installed on any vendors (Solaris, Tru64-UNIX, AIX, HP/UX, DG-UX, ...)
systems you may manage.

If we're not interoperable with other UNIXen, why even have it in
base? If you manage a mix of FreeBSD/Linux systems only I can see
having it in base. If you manage a heterogeneous environment with
legacy applications that use rdist across platforms, like I do,
it's just bloat that can be installed if required from ports.
If you manage a new site without any ties to the past, skip rdist
entirely and use rsync.

If you have to interoperate with Solaris, AIX, Tru64-UNIX, HP/UX,
DG-UX, and SVR4.2: Use 44bsd-rdist.

If you have to interoperate with Linux: Use rdist6.

If you want to use something truly modern: Use rsync.

If you are going to go to all the trouble of installing rdist6 on
vendor systems, e.g. Solaris, etc., in order to interoperate with
the Linux and proposed FreeBSD, why not install rsync instead. It's
eaiser to use and doesn't require a distfile. That's why I think rdist
is bloat.

Hence I don't think there should be any preference given to one
software/file distribution package over another. They all attempt
to do the same thing using different protocols. Let the user
decide what they need for their environment.
