I guess this may depend on your particular brand of modem, but my US Robotics manual says this: AT&Kn where n is one of: 0: Data compression disabled 1: Automatic detection if compression is to be activated / deactivated 2: Data compression enabled 3: MNP5 compression enabled I don't know if this is standared for all modems, but you might try adding &K0 to your AT init string and see what happens.
