You haven't been around enough of those drives if you aren't soured on them. So, FreeBSD isn't working quite correctly with this particular piece of crap. You can hardly blame FreeBSD for that, even though FreeBSD can and probably will work around the problem so that it does work correctly, it was not FreeBSD's problem to begin with. An unfortunate drawback of an OS working around a problem in a generic way via software for a misbehaving device is that it then paves the way for future devices to behave the same way and get away with it when the device vendor performs validation against that OS.
