It sounds to me like the Evo has a problem with its ACPI functions, reporting a temperature that is well outside the bounds of what any system should be able to handle. The best thing I can think of would be to compile a bare kernel without ACPI support on another system and create a boot disk with it. Also make sure to make an MFSROOT disk to get sysinstall running, from there on, you will be able to install from the CD-ROM.
