Here's what happens here. The make(1) (the one that's run during a buildworld) is passed the "-m src/share/mk" argument. Since it cannot find a makefile in .CURDIR (src/gnu/usr.bin/cc/cc1plus) it ends up using the src/share/mk/Makefile. Here's the demo: $ cd /var/empty && make -n make: no target to make. $ cd /var/empty && make -n -m /usr/src/share/mk make: don't know how to make bsd.README. Stop This feature is (vaguely) documented in the make(1) manpage: : -I directory : Specify a directory in which to search for makefiles and included : makefiles. The system makefile directory (or directories, see : the -m option) is automatically included as part of this list.
