This may be purely electrical in nature.  The inside of a computer is
a nasty RF environment to do audio oscillation in.  I have a Intel
Providence (dual PPro) a system with an onboard (Crystal) audio
chipset where I could hear video events with the sound turned up.
Wasn't enough with speakers at normal volume to be a bother, but with
headphones I could almost tell what was happening with my eyes shut
;)
