TeXLive has a _huge_ list of options, and its own configuration/install script. I guess that makes it hard to port. > Is there a foolproof/idiotproof way of installing TeXLive, even from > source, that does not require one to have tetex? I've documented my install (including building the binaries from source) at http://www.xs4all.nl/~rsmith/unix/misc.xhtml#updatingtexlivetoversion2009 I've been using TeXLive on FreeBSD for years without problems. There are some ports (e.g. auctex for emacs) that require TeX. For those ports, I patch their Makefiles to use TeXLive.
