Never ever ever upgrade just the kernel. This is several times more important when you are upgrading across version numbers. There is an excellent tutorial on how to make world, including tips for remote upgrading. You can find it at http://www.freebsd.org/docs.html. I upgrade machines remotely all the time, just follow the steps on that tutorial to the letter and you'll be ok.
