There are a lot more than iButton rings with Java in them: there's
serial number iButtons, add-only memory iButtons, temperature sensor
iButtons, addressable switch iButtons, and more. And they're available
in other packages: transistor-style, surface mount, etc.

I've got a network of the temperature sensor ones spread throughout my
home, controlled by FreeBSD, of course!
