Can't you boot into single user mode and correct the passwords that way? When you get that message "booting in ... seconds" press a key, then type boot -s. I recall having a similar problem when upgrading. I think it was because the password authentication method changed, so the encrypted passwords were the same, but they meant something entirely different.
