This means that they will only work under windows. All modem software that is normally onboard, such as Vbis, etc., is now supplied as a windows driver. This is a Bad Thing(tm). Not only does it mean you have no FreeBSD/Linux/Solaris drivers, it also means that you don't really have a 56K modem, just a 9600 baud modulator/demodulator. Even if you had Windows, this would still be a bad deal. As tough as it sounds, you may need to go buy a new modem. And non-winmodems are more expensive than winmodems. Basically, anything that is PCI or less than $50 dollars will be a winmodem, though there are exceptions. Look for a modem that says it will work with DOS (or any other OS besides Windows). Last I looked, the Creative ModemBlaster was fine. The safest bet though is to get an external modem.
