ok, hi..

These three have been bugging me for some time now. I work long hours,
unfortunately not in
computers. It is easier (more efficient) for me to ask my stupid
questions on this mailing list rather than search for the answers
myself. I hope that some of you can offer a little enlightenment.

Box(1)
Hardware- i386, intel p133.
Issue: This machine used to be a 486dx2 running 2.8-stable, limited
install. Anyway, I fried it doing some testing so I upped it to a p133.
I am currently trying to compile an isa pcmcia interface (yes I have
already compiled a current kernel ) that I yanked from my AS200. All
options I have tried in the kernel still respond with: unknown is0:
(swapbox---- something or other). The only other modem that I have is
one of those "shudder" winmodems, so I require the pccard support so I
may use the pcmcia modem from my laptop. The pcmcia interface reveals no
identifiable markings to persuade me on who the fuck manufactured it.

Box(2)
Hardware- i386, intel p(2)450.
Issue: Just bought this for 500bux. Nice computer, a little unsure of
the symantics of these babies yet. Anyway, as I drudge into this new
design (I can't believe how big that processor is.. I wanna plug it into
my atari.) I realize they have changed design and implementaion a bit. I
use caddys for most of my hd's and when I swapped one into this box, It
only recognised 16megs. Sounds rather unlikely for a sorta-new-box, so i
opened it up and read the chip and it says 64megs. I believe they call
it sdram. I remember options in the kernel for supporting upwards of
norm amounts of memory, but I do not believe I should require options
for a single chip of 64 megs. Any ideas?

Box(3)
Hardware- Alpha, pc164.
Issue: I have an AS200 running 4.0, and it works wonderfully. This Is
why I bought this baby.
I am trying to install 4.0 on this. As you are probably aware this mb
has ide controllers. I have tried ide hd's with little success. I
recently upgraded the console firmware (srm btw) and not even it will
recognise an ide hd. It will however recognise an ide cdrom. So I bought
an adaptec scsi card, which appears to be supported and tried to install
on a quantum fireball 2gig hd. Install goes fine until I want to
allocate the hd. Which for some reason is not present. I have
successfully installed rh linux on this, but who want's that shit.

Any help on any of these issues would be greatly appreciated. Oh wait..
one more..

Box(4)
Hardware- Dell lattitude cpi 233.
Issue: Trivial, I am trying to get xmms to work. I know the soundcard is
a crystal47XX whatever, which I see little options in lint for this
card. The x over from 3.4-4.0 has seemed to lost the support for my
soundcard.
Currently, sndstat and dmesg report it compiled as an sb16 (which it is
compatibility wise) and as device pcm0. Sound works great w/ cdrom and
mixer works, however I cannot play mp3's. I have followed some of the
recent talk on this list about sound shit, none of those were of any
help for this issue.
Xmms starts up, and when I play sound it either a) is hella slow; or
b)makes a "loud" sharp brap noise that stops immediately.

My condolences for this pathetically drawn out posting.

Tired and frustrated,

Paul H.
