A couple of observations: 

1)	The selected speed may not be achieved unless there's a peer
	talking at the same rate.  I observe this all the time on my
	access router with WaveLan card -- it's set for autosense, and
	when another ad hoc network peer is in range,  the rate is 11.
	Otherwise, it's 2.

2)	those ifconfig media options don't work at all.
