I don't think setting the bass/treble is supported on the EMU10k1 
(the chip your SB Live uses)

At least on my Live the bass and treble knobs don't appear in 
mixer(8), so I assume the driver does not support setting 
them. 

As a last resort, do your tweeters have their own volume knob as
well?  You might try turning them all (or most) of the way up
and setting your system volume low (not hard as the mixer settings
are very quiet for me, I normally have to leave the sliders in
the 80-100 range to get much sound out of my SB Live.
