Perhaps the source of confusion here is that the "market" here is DEVELOPERS -- who aren't really a market themselves but rather create one. How do you market FreeBSD to developers? Give them what developers want: a stable platform, good development tools, and access to as many users as possible through a SINGLE API and ABI.
