I doesn't work on my Thinkpad A30p, either. I have found no way to turn 
off the screen completely while in supsend. However I have only tried 2 
of the 3 sysctls mentioned by Kevin...

I remember it all working under 4.x with APM. I guess I will give that a 
try again. Despite these problems, there are some Thinkpads, which are 
know to work with acpi. One trick is disabling dri in the kernel / 
X-Config. This prevents the system from loading the radeon.ko module, 
that is likely to cause this problem whith the background light. Didn't 
work here, maybe you are lucky...
