Just a "me too" note: I have exactly the same problem on exactly the 
same hardware. I've recently updated from 6.0-release and X.Org 6.8 
(where it worked fine!) to 6.1-prerelease and X.Org 6.9.

Maybe something is broken wih X300 support. The system hangs hard so 
it's hard to tell where it hangs.
