I don't know what the difference might be but I did some digging and found https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4715#c25 Setting "directory name cache size = 0" fixes the problem for me, apparently it's a performance killer but I don't have any directories with huge numbers of entries and the server is very overpowered for what it's used for. It's a workaround not a fix but it works for me till someone that has a better understanding of the systems involved fixes it correctly. My basic understanding (which may be wrong) is that Samba expects a certain thing relating to listing directories from FreeBSD that it does not do but most Linux distros do.
