My $0.02 personal opinion: if we (say, nobody among -committers@ or someone who is actively answering PRs if any) do not intend to maintain it ourselves, then it would be probably a good idea to make it up-to-date with the vendor version, or rename it to something like 'bsdlex' and teach the build infrastructure about it.
