Unfortunately, the service script does not take that into account, so if you want it to report correctly, place these lines in /etc/rc.conf: sendmail_enable=3D"NONE" sendmail_submit_enable=3D"NO" sendmail_outbound_enable=3D"NO" sendmail_msp_queue_enable=3D"NO" That will cover all bases, in case some other tool depends on the value of sendmail_enable.
