Okay, here is a brief listing of what I found that worked
and what did not work.

What worked:

ls cat more less vi sh tcsh csh pwd find df du ps dmesg env
brandelf file uname tail head echo grep touch route cd w
who finger date kldstat ldd which whereis rev test chmod
mesg talk mail fetch

(That's just what I've tried so far)

What hasn't worked:

man (the libstdc++ problem)
info ("info: dir: File name too long)
passwd ("passwd: could not lock the passwd file: : Operation not supported)
ports -- first there was no sys.mk so I copied the contents of
/usr/share/mk/ into the correct place but then it told
me: "===> screen-3.9.13 : Your system is too old to use this bsd.port.mk. You need a fresh make world or an upgrade kit. Please go to http://www.FreeBSD.org/ports/ or a mirror site and follow the instructions." -- I was trying to buid screen...
netstat -- almost works -- "netstat: kvm not available"
adduser (pw: group update: Operation not supported
pwd_mkdb: flock: Operation not supported
pw: user 'welchsm' disappeared during update
adduser: ERROR: There was an error adding user (welchsm).
Add another user? (yes/no): )

This is what I have at this point.

Anything you'd like me to try?

                                            Sean

Try out all your favourite utilities and see if they work OK or not.
Maybe
try and compile a few ports.

I'll put some instructions together for getting a system working from
disk.

later,

Peter.
