I created an image using crochet with the AutoSize option disabled and 
the ImageSize option set to 31800mb.  Then I flashed this image on my 
32GB Sandisk card that I previously couldn't get to boot at all.  It 
booted successfully 10 out of 10 times (even without the hack that 
disables high speed).  Here are the SD card settings:

root@raspberry-pi:~ # dmesg | grep mmcsd
mmcsd0: 32GB <SDHC SL32G 8.0 SN 0F6BB463 MFG 10/2014 by 3 SD> at mmc0 
41.6MHz/4bit/65535-block
